VMC by the Numbers

A new 550,000 square foot hospital wing

Thanks to the voters of Santa Clara County, VMC is replacing old facilities with a new, earthquake safe hospital wing. The facility is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in October 2017. The building will house adult acute and critical care units in addition to VMC’s renowned physical rehabilitation center.

The ONLY level 1 trauma center

VMC provides San Jose’s only Level 1 trauma center, the highest level awarded by the American College of Surgeons.

9 Nationally ranked specialty units

VMC provides specialty services including a world-class rehabilitation center, regional burn center, high-risk maternity program, neonatal intensive care unit, and trauma center.

200% increase in patients in 20 years

While the population of Santa Clara County has grown 22% over the past two decades, the numbers of patients walking through the doors of VMC has increased by 200%. 1 in 4 Santa Clara County residents is served by VMC with 950,000 patients receiving care here each year.

100% Open Door policy

VMC has an open door policy that guarantees everyone access to care, regardless of the ability to pay. 85% of our patients are not privately insured.

5,000 babies born each year

More babies are born at VMC than any other hospital in Northern California and nearly 450 of those are high-risk births cared for in the neonatal care unit.

11 Community Clinics

VMC is not just a hospital – it’s a community health system with a focus on primary care and prevention. Eleven community clinics, from Gilroy to Sunnyvale, serve 900,000 patients annually. From immunizations for kids to diabetes care for adults, the clinic system is an essential part of the public healthcare safety net in Santa Clara County.
